Celebrating National Police Woman Day

Today, September 12th, we proudly celebrate National Police Woman Day and recognize the outstanding women in law enforcement who serve our communities with dedication and honor.

At the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, we are especially grateful for two exceptional deputies: Deputy Paige Mantia and Deputy Lillian Reinhardt. These remarkable women embody the core values of honor, integrity, and professionalism in everything they do, ensuring the safety and well-being of the citizens of Monroe County.

Their dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed, and we are proud to have them as part of our Sheriff's Department family. Please join us in thanking Deputy Mantia and Deputy Reinhardt for their unwavering commitment to public safety and service.

Honoring Women in Law Enforcement: A Rich History

Women have played an important role in law enforcement for over a century. In 1910, Alice Stebbins Wells became the first female police officer in the United States, serving with the Los Angeles Police Department. Her role paved the way for generations of women to enter the field, breaking barriers and proving their capability in a traditionally male-dominated profession.

As more women joined law enforcement, they brought unique perspectives and skills that have enriched the profession. They have risen through the ranks, serving as detectives, supervisors, and even police chiefs. These women have not only protected their communities but have also worked to change policies, increase diversity, and advocate for the needs of victims, especially in areas like domestic violence and child protection.

Looking Forward: Continuing the Legacy

Today, women like Deputy Mantia and Deputy Reinhardt are part of this proud legacy, continuing the work started over 100 years ago. Their courage, dedication, and leadership serve as inspiration for future generations of women in law enforcement.

At the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, we are committed to fostering a work environment that encourages and supports women in law enforcement roles. We believe that diversity strengthens our department and enhances our ability to serve the community effectively. By empowering women to take on key roles in public safety, we not only honor the past but also look toward a future where women continue to excel in every area of law enforcement.

As we celebrate National Police Woman Day, we encourage young women and girls to consider careers in law enforcement, where they too can make a lasting difference in their communities.

Happy National Police Woman Day, Deputy Mantia and Deputy Reinhardt!

Thank you for your dedicated service and for being shining examples of professionalism and integrity.

Monroe County Sheriff's Department: Drive Smart, Drive Safe

Summertime is upon us, bringing with it some of the most cherished moments for our youth. As our children enjoy their time outdoors, it's crucial to ensure their safety on the roads. In light of this, we urge everyone in Monroe County to drive smart and responsibly.

As part of our Community Involvement Initiative, Sheriff Neal Rohlfing is proud to introduce our "Drive Smart" campaign, which emphasizes the importance of careful driving, especially in areas where children might be playing or riding bikes. Remember, safety starts with you!

Request a "Drive Smart" Sign

We are deeply committed to the safety of our communities, particularly on the roads where our children play and our families live. Our "Drive Smart" campaign encourages drivers to adopt safer driving habits, reminding everyone that each street could be home to a loved one. This initiative features impactful yard signs placed throughout the county with a clear message: "Drive Smart, Drive Like Your Kid Lives Here."

Spearheaded by Sheriff Rohlfing, this program aims to foster a culture of care and responsibility among drivers. To support this initiative, we are offering free “Drive like your kids live here” signs to Monroe County residents. These durable signs serve as a subtle reminder for drivers to slow down in neighborhoods.

Guidelines for Sign Placement

How to Request a Sign

Signs can be picked up in the lobby of the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 4 PM, excluding holidays. Join us in making Monroe County a safer place for all residents by driving smartly and considerately. Together, we can ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for our youth.

By embracing this initiative and displaying a "Drive Smart" sign, you are taking an active role in promoting road safety in Monroe County. Every sign acts as a reminder to drivers to be mindful of their speed and surroundings, potentially preventing accidents and saving lives.

Let's work together to create a safer environment for our children and families. Drive smart, drive safe, and make this summer a season of joy and safety.
