The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is committed to conducting proactive criminal investigations and thorough follow-up inquiries for a wide range of offenses. Our team works tirelessly to apprehend all suspects involved and exhaust all leads until justice is served.

CID specializes in investigating a diverse array of crimes including burglaries, residential burglaries, felony thefts, retail thefts, credit card fraud, identity thefts, homicides, assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, family and child abuse, suicides, suspicious deaths, fatal automobile accidents, computer crimes, bad checks, auto theft crimes, vehicle burglaries, and arson.

Our dedicated Investigators are tasked with handling cases involving property loss or damage. They not only apprehend criminals and recover stolen property but also provide support to victims throughout court proceedings. Additionally, CID conducts proactive prevention seminars for businesses and neighborhood groups to educate them on avoiding victimization.

Our division is composed of a Chief Investigator, two general crime Investigators, one Narcotic Investigator assigned to MEGSI, one Auto Theft Investigator assigned to MEATTF, and one Sergeant assigned to Highway Interdiction. Furthermore, our Investigators are also members of the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis Area, The Illinois Child Death Task Force, and the Secret Service Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force.

In addition to crime detection and suspect apprehension, the gathering of evidence is of paramount importance in criminal investigations. Deputies and Investigators are encouraged to collect relevant physical evidence to support successful prosecutions. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department manages all items taken by and stored at the Sheriff’s Department, including evidence, items taken for safekeeping, lost or found property, and abandoned property.

While the detection of crimes and the apprehension of offenders are of primary importance, gathering the evidence for a successful prosecution is oftentimes a critical element of criminal investigations. Deputies and Investigators of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department are encouraged to collect pertinent physical evidence whenever possible and practical. When collected, processed and analyzed properly, physical evidence becomes not only a crucial element of fact finding, but of law enforcement as a profession.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department manages all items taken by and stored at the Sheriff’s Department, including evidence, items taken for safekeeping, lost or found property, and abandoned property.

Evidence - Items taken or recovered in the course of an investigation.

Safekeeping - Includes the following types of property:

• Property obtained by the Department for safekeeping, such as a firearm
• Personal property of an arrestee not taken as evidence
• Property taken for safekeeping under authority of a law

Lost or Found Property - Includes property found by an employee or citizen that has no apparent evidentiary value and where the owner cannot be readily identified or contacted.

Abandoned Property - Includes property found by an employee or citizen that appears to be intentionally left or discarded by the owner.
