The Monroe County Sheriff's Department is dedicated to ensuring the safety of our communities, particularly on the roads where our children play and our families live. Our "Drive Smart" campaign is designed to encourage drivers to adopt safer driving habits, reminding everyone that each street could be home to a loved one. This initiative features impactful yard signs placed throughout the county with a clear message: "Drive Smart, Drive Like Your Kid Lives Here." Spearheaded by Sheriff Neal Rohlfing, this program aims to make our roads safer for everyone by fostering a culture of care and responsibility among drivers. We are committed to public safety, and that includes reminding motorist to slow down in lower speed limit areas, especially neighborhoods.
The durable “Drive like your kids live here” sign and stand are free to our citizens. You must live in Monroe County and will serve as a subtle reminder to those driving through neighborhoods to slow down.
We do have certain rules that must be followed:
Limit – One per household, please
Available for homeowners and renters in Monroe County
Must comply with Monroe County sign ordinance
The sign is classified as a “short-term Temporary Sign”
It can be displayed up to 90 consecutive days
Sign permit is not required
Minimum 10-foot setback from a roadway
Please respect homeowners’ association rules
Please review and comply with local sign ordinance rules if you live inside a village or city.
Please do not place signs adjacent to major roadways, on public rights-of-way, near intersections that might affect visibility, or placing signs in “every yard in the neighborhood.
Make sure signs do not interfere with visibility for backing out of driveways.
To request a sign, you can pick them up in the lobby Monday – Friday 8am-4pm excluding holidays.
